How the Internet Turned into a College Campus

Virtual reality these days isn’t just for social stimulation. You’re no longer playing a buff warrior or ninja online with a funny name; rather, you’re a plain person, probably with the same name online. Your only purpose for being online, if not to cast spells and participate in missions to find magical urns, is to earn something you’d normally earn in a classroom:

A degree.

It’s funny how the internet did that. When you can actually obtain accredited online degrees in almost any field, you know the World Wide Web has come a long way— and the Internet has become a college campus. That’s only the start of it, too. The truth is the concept of correspondence courses and online courses has been around for some time now; but earning a degree has now become more advanced in ways that would stagger you. It’s becoming more and more like actually being in a classroom.

Case in point: internet video capability. Webcams are a powerful asset online these days and can be employed for the use of classroom effectiveness and attendance for pursuing online degrees. Moreover, options in virtual reality have opened more interesting endeavors to make education that much more enjoyable. The social online software Second Life has proved to make lectures an actual reality. You’re re-created in pixel form, but you’re still sitting there listening to your professor lecture about everything from art to calculus.

With the addition of online storage drives, saving documents is a snap too. You can use Microsoft’s Skydrive as a means to store every thesis paper you have or every test you’ve taken. It’s all about convenience.

No longer is the internet just a tool. It has become the true cyberspace now. Because of the technological advancement, virtual college campuses now exist. Ready to take notes? Because there will be a test on this.

Most people have at least one computer in their lives, either they work on one at work or they have one at home. One of the most common problems with computers is that they cause problems with the eyes. Here are some tips for reducing eye problems because of computer usage.

  1. Keep your monitor at least 20-30 inches from your eyes.
  2. Put your monitor in a way that its top is at the level that’s slightly below your eye level.
  3. Tilt your monitor’s top away with an angle that is 10-20 degrees so that you have the best viewing angle.
  4. Change the lighting to lower the amount of harsh reflections and glare. It’s also possible to use glare filters on the computer screen.  You can test this by turning off your monitor and see what you can see in the screen. Adjust the position or the angle of your monitor so that here aren’t any competing reflections or lights.
  5. The structure or background wall behind your monitor shouldn’t be very shiny or loud, since this is going to distract you.
  6. Adjust your brightness so that you have a contrast that is good between the background and the letters. If you see any flickering, replace your monitor.
  7. Keep your monitor clean from finger prints and dust.
  8. Use LCD instead of a CRT if possible, because they are easier on your eyes and their surface is normally anti-reflective.

With so many people working from home using their computer and a lot of jobs depending on computers, these tips are very useful for just about anyone. The tips can help you to avoid headaches and strain on the eyes.

Can Anyone Take Down Google?

Microsoft’s personal search engine Bing has been receiving a lot of attention in the recent weeks. It appears that they are making a strong marketing push to make Bing the top search engine choice, replacing the king of all search engines, Google.

Google is more than just a search engine for most; it’s a way of life. When a search engine becomes its own verb, then it has officially made a big impact. So with all the press for Bing and the marketing push, what the world wants to know is if anyone can really knock off Google.

The truth is that it isn’t entirely out of the question. For those that believe that Google is the same kind of power and monopoly that Microsoft was, they are sorely mistaken. Google is a powerful company capable of a lot, but they are in no way, shape, or form the same kind of monopoly that Microsoft possessed, or possesses.

When Mircosoft had begun, they had created the Windows system which computers operated from. The more people that used Windows, the harder it was for anyone else to defy convention and use anything else, since it was what everyone is using.

Google can and does feel the effects of that kind of influence, just never quite to that degree. At this point in time, no matter how popular Google becomes, people will always have a choice.

With that being said, it would be possible for someone to overtake Google as the best search engine but it would have to be, far and away, the best. If someone needs to search for Los Angeles apartments, they are going to be inclined to use Google. Not because everyone else uses it, but because right now it is the best search engine around and that’s all that really matters.

Researchers have developed a spectrum of products that can be used in places of security. Computers are now moved on from the traditional mouse and keyboard scheme of doing things, to becoming touch sensitive and intuitive.

Now the European Union funded Miauce project seeks to do just that. Miauce is expanded as Multi-modal interactions analysis and exploration of Users within a controlled environment. The project aims to develop technologies that adjudicate behavior patterns of people in commercial places.

A lot of factors will be taken into consideration. Some of them are how a person looks at things. A gazing time is taken from the person’s eyeball movements. Body movements are scrutinized closely to see any irregular patterns. The applications developed will not just be used for security; they will also be used in marketing activities as well.

To do all this computers have to have a kind of all-enveloping intelligence. Multiple points will be used to make it multimodal. What this means is that a person or group will be monitored from multiple points, and the data will be integrated, aggregated and analyzed against a database that stores pre-fed patterns.

Talking about security, surveillance cameras can be retro-fitted with this kind of technology. Surveillance cameras just stream data from a location to a centralized place. Now with an intelligent computer providing the body-language analysis, surveillance will become more intelligible. Computer scientists have an arduous task indeed of analyzing patterns derived from surveillance cameras.

In marketing, this technology can be used to detect a person’s buying pattern in a store or a supermarket. This includes how a person moves around in a store amongst other things. Computers with this technology will make assessments on the likes and dislikes of the customer. A lot of other data can be derived as well. Using these data marketers can be more proactive in their marketing efforts. Truly, body-language detecting computers have a bright future ahead in various aspects of everyday life.

Using keywords intelligently means more than just choosing phrases that match popular searches. You also want to provide relevant information that will keep people coming back to your site over and over again. Of course, it is also better if you can use your page content to encourage those visitors to purchase goods and services.
